Vaudonjon is a tiny municipality of Montillot situated in the Yonne department of the Burgundy region. This wooded area is alternated with open wheat fields. The region is also known for its fruit and vegetable cultivation.
Montillot has a population of about 300 people. Here you will find a bakery and a grocery store, as well as a traditional ‘bar tabac’.
Auxerre, the nearest city, is approximately 32 km away. Avallon is located about 15 km from the village of Montillot which lies in a straight line between Auxerre and Vézelay. You will find this world-famous town just 6 km from Vaudonjon/Montillot.

Places to visit

  • Vézelay This UNESCO World Heritage town should not be missed on your programme! For more information we refer to the separate section ‘About Vézelay’.
  • The castle of Bazoches lies a 20-minute drive away from our B&B. This is where marshall De Vauban resided.
  • Saint-Père: In the 9th century, a monastery was built in this old village. It is believed to be the origin of the future basilica in Vézelay. Here you can still find the traditional village bakery and butcher shop, artisan shops and a beautiful church from the 13th to 15th century, classified as a historical building since the 19th century. This village is also the departure point for many walking routes to Vézelay.
  • The caves of Arcy-sur-Cure
  • Hiking in the Morvan natural park, about an hour’s drive away from Vaudonjon. You can explore the vast nature reserve on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike.
  • Auxerre This city is the capital of the Yonne department. The old town is situated on the bank of the river Yonne. The numerous cafes and restaurants on the waterfront are a popular destination for tourists. Other major attractions are the many churches and cathedrals.
  • The town of Avallon with its typical local market on Saturday morning. In the indoor market you will find organic farmers with their local products.
  • In the summer several surrounding villages organize a ‘vide-grenier’, a flea market, that always attracts many people.
  • At the local wineries you are always welcome to taste the famous burgundy wines, including  organic wines.
  • Ample choice of walking routes. Hiking maps are available for our guests.
